Grief Massage

Grief MassageGrief massage is an intentional and gentle modality which puts the mind and body into a state that allows for the safe processing of grief that is being experienced and held in the physical body.

Grief can often leave us feeling unstable, out of sync, irrational, numb, and many other things. The important thing to know is that these feelings and experiences are different for every person, and each one is valid. We also acknowledge that no grief timeline is the same and that grief can even reestablish itself when we think it has already run its course.

We come into this space recognizing that grief can be from many things, including but not limited to:

  • Loss of a relationship (through death or other means)
  • Loss or change in a job
  • Loss or change in a living situation
  • Loss of a pet
  • Loss of health
  • Injury or loss of capacity
  • Long-term illness

Kati Barker, Massage Therapist, Oly Float, Olympia WAWhen you come to see Kati Barker for a grief massage, you and Kati will speak very simply about what you are experiencing. This is not a therapy or counselling session, just enough information to give some direction to the bodywork. After welcoming your grief into a place of safety, Kati will guide through a self-assessment to look for areas of tension, pain or other sensation and hold space for that. Once the massage begins, Kati will follow the flow of energy through the body with gentle, comforting movements.

There is generally an abdominal portion to the massage, as a lot of grief is held in the gut. You can discuss any questions or concerns about this with Kati at the beginning of the session.

When you schedule a grief massage, you should be mindful of the rest of the day. It is recommended, ideally, to leave it as clear and restful as possible so you can stay in a similar attitude to the appointment and can practice self care for the rest of the day.
